How to apply textures in GIMP?

Does anyone know how to apply texture to an arbitrary shape in GIMP? I have seen qutie a bit of tutorials out there that shows how to apply texture to the whole image - just copy the texture to a new layer, and then make its overlay mode to be multiply, dissolove, etc.

But what do I do when I want to apply it to an arbitrary shape?
