Adobe CS3 - The Costs
A few days back, FreelanceSwitch.com had put up a rather indepth review of Adobe CS3 suite. And here is a quote that is tucked rather at the bottom:
Available direct from Adobe, the retail price for Web and Design Premium is $1599 USD and $1799 USD respectively. Upgrades from prior versions come in at [...]

I purchased this back in August, its a great package and feel the price is justified. Its nice have PS, Vector, video editing, video compositing, web animation, DVD menu tools accessible when ever you need it. Specially for me, cause my interest spreads amoung all mass media outlets.

I use it in class now, and I ... Really despise the new Adobe interfaces.
GIMP is better, in my eyes, than Photoshop.
Notepad++ can replace Dreamweaver for me.
Inkscape to Illustrator.
Fireworks isn't so great.
Can't see any good use for Contribute.
InDesign is... [blank response]
The only thing I can't find a replacement for is Flash. I can never seem to find a good animation program....

The odd thing is that, recently I realized Photoshop Elements 4.0 was bundled with my Wacom Intuos3. Fiddled around with it for a while, and I guess I will be trying it a bit more (when I get time). But I feel at home with GIMP now. :)

Yeah its always hard to get used to other products, Ive been using Adobe for over a decade its hard to learn stuff in other programs when you can easily just do it in the program you know. Im running into the same problem with PainterX. Its like why use a paint brush when I can just simulate one in PS, a know? But that doesn't stop me from trying tho hehe. I don't really have a reason to work on Gimp so I doubt Ill ever will, but what ever works for each person ^_^

Yup. I cannot agree with you more on that.
I think it all depends on ones workflow. How you sketch or start from a blob of paint splattered on background, and then build up the details. You can use line art in between or you can choose to go freeform. The different softwares are just, in my opinon, tools that we can choose to use as we want.
