Just been brainstorming, and finally came up with some concept thumbnail silhouettes:

Another one of my 'demon' project. Muhahaha!

Thanks! :p

Did a bit of rendering on the face.

This is just rendering of the general shape. I have not yet put in the effect of the primary light yet.

Thank you gusak. :)

Finished detailing the volumes of his body:

Next, the metal stuff.

Vyoma

I started working on the metal pieces.

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5056/slug04rp6.png

Now, I am having a bit of problem in terms of how I approach painting the brass texture. (The metal parts are intended to be brass).

I could wuss out of it and make it some other metal, but I think I should push myself a bit. ;)

So, here is some brass texture study:

http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/6686/slug04ben2.png

Any suggestions, pointers, critique at this point is welcome.

Clean up on Slug:

http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/1097/slug05qi5.png

And then, I am trying to apply the brass study I did earlier on this shoulder armor:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/707/slug06uh8.png

It is a bit saturated than the body - I will be reducing the levels a bit later when I apply highlights and render the skin/hide.

Completed the work on the brass material.

Next - detailing the primary light. That should make the hide richer and I might adjust the color levels of the brass metal to further bring down the saturation levels.

Did the rendering of the light and shadows on the hide.

Here is a sneak peek of the next character. (Sneak peek because it is yet to be published at KalaaLog.com :p )

I started working on the second character - Slice

Even though I would be painting directly over the sketch layer, I wanted to have the reference shapes so that I could adjust color levels later if needed. Hence, I spent some effort to create the flats.

I moved from GIMP to Photoshop because I find their selection tools to be comfortable.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9651/slice06qg4.png

I have even shown the layer organization for those who are curious. The painting though is done as usual. I am using a soft edged brush with pen pressure turned on.

You've got quite the amount of work to do. :P

I can see why you might switch to Photoshop over GIMP. Once you use Photoshop, you see that GIMP lacks some things that may make the difference in general. I've found it happens a lot, but you'll get use to using the two programs just the same.

Vyoma

Yup - lots of work to do! :)

With respect to why I switched to Photoshop for this particular one, was the Polygon Lasso Tool http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/5407/polygonlassotoolsg2.png.

Do we have something like this in GIMP? We have the freehand lasso tool in GIMP, but I could not find that one. :)

I also got photoshop CS2 to work on Ubuntu, so now I practice on both of them (GIMP and Photo). Still, for personal use, I think GIMP is enough...

By the way, crazy demon coming up there!

Thanks - Sunday ends here, so I am not sure I can work more on this until next weekend. Seems like there is a huge chunk of work cut out for me at my day job. :|

By the way, are you using WINE or something to get Photoshop to run on Ubuntu? I would love to spend most of my time on the Ubuntu half of my dual boot. :P

I use WINE. They fixed the pressure sensitivity with alternatekeyboard devices (the way to get wacom to work there). So, CS2 now is officially fully functional on WINE in Ubuntu =)))

Same here. I develop games and sprites in Python with the Pygame module, and I find myself using GIMP more than Photoshop because of it's simplicity.

Also:

The only thing I think is close to the Polygon Lasso is Scissors tool. However, what I haven't seen in Photoshop also, is Color Selection tool. That's something tricked out! :)

Vyoma

Isn't Scissors Tool the one that 'intelligently' grabs on to outlines or sharp areas? I found that quite annoying in fact to create the flats.

Did some short experimenting with the GIMP path tools. Seems like the results are achievable. :)

Guess I will make a short video tutorial explaining the approach.

Steve
June 2nd, 2008, 07:25 PM
I don't actually know how Scissors tool functions, or if there's even a way to increase/decrease the amount of tolerance it makes to select the shapes, but I just know it's the closest to open polygon selection tool.

Paths are also an optional way to go, because sometimes Selection just doesn't cut it. ;)

Vyoma
June 2nd, 2008, 11:14 PM
Yup - that Scissors tool does drive one nuts. :P Paths on the other hand, as I experimented with it a little - just rock! :)

Back in Photoshop, completed the initial rendering of his skin tone:

Ok - I completed the basic painting.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7247/slice09ty8.png

You will notice all the hard edges where I used the flats to make a selection and paint with in it quite quickly. Now, I will be going in and making them softer edges. Where appropriate, I will be trying to make it look more blended.

After that, I would be giving a strong yellow-white lighting from the top right.

Did a block out under painting.

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/5778/screech04aji3.png

The initial block outs I put here are actually the complementaries of the target or true colors of the different parts.

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/1516/screech04bce3.png

Oh - one more thing - this time I was able to do the flats in GIMP itself using the path tools (http://cgpainting.com/showthread.php?t=391).
