Hey Hans! Looks like you are doing a great start.
For a first painting - it is really great.

One question - will you be keeping the neutral gray in the final work? I would advice you to avoid it and use another color that is very desaturated instead.

But if it is a stop gap, as it is a WIP, great work. :) Keep them coming.

GJ! Your iris' are quite beautiful. Proportions on the face are quite good as well. though you need to use smaller brushes to better build you hair up then you have now, but Its a good base atm.

Some suggestions:
1. As Dreleen said, use finer brushes for hair. What you did to the point is right, you just need to go in there once more with some finer brush.
2. Try to define the edges a bit. They seem to make it loose definition of the shape. Not too dark outlines else they will turn out to be cartoonish - but a little more less blurry on the edges.
