Colored version of the phoenix drawing. I'm dissapointed. Doesnt show any fury or emotion just a plain colored version.

Hmmm. Yes - if it is a realistic style that you were looking at, then it does look like it needs a bit more of work.

Here are my suggestions:
- For the flowy fire that goes around the phoenix, use a softer but larger brush - and also, use another color there that is wee bit away from the red hue - may be orange or yellow (soft brush ofcourse). That would give it the depth.
- For the phoenix - if you sketch is in a seperate layer, try to make it a little more transparent. The hard black lines, make it look less furry. As for making it look more furry, just dive in (zoom in) and work on the details assuming one or two light sources. (See the feather tutorial - that should give you a faint idea)

The thing is when i remove the sketch layer is looks like shit. :X

Ah - that would be so, because the color alone would not have been painted within the form. What you could do was - not completely remove the sketch layer - just make if more transparent/faded.

its at 75% now. But if i take it off more its just gonna look like crap.

Hmmm. Let me try to work on this when I get back home.

Is it ok if I do a paint over on it?

Sure would be great.

I can send you the psd if you want it.

PSD? Nah. I am not sure if GIMP can open that. It is ok - I can take the image from the top of this thread and work on it.

Ok. I did not do a full paint over, but only at few places that should give you a guide at how you can approach.

For he head and the neck:

and the right wing tip:

Notice that I toned down the black outline, and zoomed in and gave a bit more detail to give it a furry look. I did not go in and draw every bristle of the feather - just gave a hint of it with the highlight and shadow.

As for the swirling fire, I gave it a bit more volume.

Also, to signify the volume, I gave it a bit of depth by adding a lighter orange-yellow tone at certain parts. You can still go ahead and add more curvy tongues of flames around these main spiral flame.

Here is the full image with the changes:

The image is still the same, except for the above mentioned parts that I changed. You can see the contrast with the older part which has a darker outline.

Hope this helps.

Glad that it was useful.

Some time back, when I was starting to digital paint, I struggled with hard edges. Some one pointed out to me, and showed me how I can approach it, and it helped. :)
